CHAPTER EIGHT

“You really shouldn’t be coming this close to the castle. What if the guards see you?” Lia whispered as they walked side by side through the walled garden. Her skin caressed by moonlight as though dipped in shimmering silver.

Fehrn near floated out of his body. His wolf burst with pride at her concern.

“I need to make sure you return safely. Couldn’t rest otherwise.”

She shot him a shy smile from beneath the hood of her cloak, a faint stain of pink still flushed her cheeks. They paused in the deep shadow at the edge of the courtyard. From here he had a clear line of sight to the door to her quarters. It was closer than he would have preferred and way too exposed in this part of the castle grounds, but his instinct to protect was overriding his training.

She turned to face him, placing her hands over his chest.

“I guess this is where we part ways, thief.” She playfully dragged her tongue across the word, softly elongating it with tenderness in her voice.

He closed her hands in his, raising one to his lips in silent reply.

“I don’t even know your name…” She trailed off gently.

“Best for you not to, little dragon.” He reluctantly let go and shifted his weight backwards just a fraction to put an agonising distance between them.

She nodded, drawing her cloak tighter around her and moved out of the shadows towards the castle. His chest wrenched and a low rumble sounded as he fought every instinct that told him not to let her leave his sight. His fingers raked through his hair in frustration. Fuck.

She paused as she reached the threshold, turning to face him with one hand on the door. With a slow drift of her fingers she lowered her hood.

“Lia.” She breathed softly. Voluntarily sharing her name. As if she could sense he wanted—needed—to retain something that would hold on to her memory. Her long dark hair swayed as it swept down her back, and the trail of her cloak rippled as it disappeared from view.

She was gone.

His heart felt like it had grown wings. He had been through hell and back over his three hundred years and yet this witch had him in a fluttery mess of emotion. All cool reserve had been incinerated in the wake of her magnificent life force.

Lia.

He ran her name across his tongue.

Fehrn let out a long pained breath. It was for the best they had said goodbye. His world wasn’t one for having romantic attachments or commitments. While not explicitly a rule, it was more an act of self preservation. You could be dedicated to a mission for decades if that was how long it took. It was rumoured among the supernaturals that one spy had been undercover for over two hundred years.

This was definitely the right decision.

Certainly.

Absolutely.

Not at all terrifying to think that his heart felt like it would burst at the thought of never seeing her smile or feeling her flame tinged skin again.

Crack!

A spark of light, then a dull thud echoed through his skull.
